MTONZ is a registered not-for-profit on a mission to grow the CNC machining industry in New Zealand through inspiring and training the next generation of CNC machinists.
Our Why
MTONZ was born out of an industry need to tackle both a mounting skills shortage and a need to redevelop and modernise training qualifications to ensure the CNC industry continues to grow and progress with a sustainable influx of well-trained apprentices and employees long into the future.
01. Promote the Industry
We travel to schools, careers days and expos promoting the CNC machining industry as an exciting career path.
We showcase componentry manufactured by our members so aspiring apprentices can see first-hand what incredible parts are manufactured here in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
We advocate for the industry with relevant governmental bodies; currently, we are working to redevelop the CNC machining qualifications framework to an international standard.
02. Inspire, Hire & Train
We link up local schools with our member’s CNC shops and take students on workshop tours, leading to work experience and apprenticeship opportunities. This gives students first-hand experience of what the environment is like and can see these machines in action.
We assist our member companies to hire new apprentices by running job ads, shortlisting applicants and training new apprentices.
03. Upskill
We offer Professional Development Courses to upskill new or current staff, ensuring they keep up to date in an ever-changing industry:
- Competent CNC Operator
- Competent CNC Setter
- Competent QA Technician
- Fundamentals in CNC Turning
- Fundamentals in CNC Milling.
Our Team
Andrew Reid
MTONZ Spokesperson
Before moving to New Zealand, Andrew completed his apprenticeship in Scotland working for a global oil company qualifying in Level 6 Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering and Level 5 Engineering Operations. It was during his 5 years of working for Buckley Systems that Andrew developed a real passion for helping train apprentices. After working with Nathan Stronge on some projects to create training material, Andrew’s passion for training led him to work with Nathan to develop a solution for the industry skills shortage – and so MTONZ was born.
